European discount retailer Lidl is considering whether to follow other retailers in permitting the sale of farmed salmon raised with feather meal as an alternative to fishmeal, a protein-rich byproduct of poultry processing.

As one of Europe's leading chains, Lidl holds more than a 10 percent share of the UK retail seafood market.

"We are currently in discussions with various organizations to better understand the potential of feather meal as a sustainable and resource-efficient option for fish farming," a spokesperson for Lidl International told IntraFish.
