Calysta gets $30m ‘ringing endorsement' from Cargill, pension funds for gas to feed protein

Cargill is one of several new investors in the US natural gas conversion technology firm, which is developing FeedKind, a protein-rich biomass for fish and poultry produced by a microbial culture with natural gas as sole nutrition and energy source. On Tuesday this week, Calysta revealed it had generated $30m in funding in a C Series round with backing from the corn milling division of Cargill, together with investment by the Municipal Employee Retirement System (MERS) of Michigan.

Evonik's new lysine plant goes on stream in Brazil

Evonik's new L-lysine production site in the Brazilian state of Parana is now operational, bringing an additional 80,000 metric tons (Mt) of capacity.
"The new [Biolys] plant in Castro is our first amino acid plant in Latin America. We will target the [pig and poultry] markets in Latin America in general and in Brazil in particular," said a spokesperson for the German group.

Japanese company to build fishmeal plant in Russia

Japanese company Mitsui is planning to build a fishmeal production plant on the Sakhalin Island in the far east part of Russia. Negotiations on this project are in the final stage, according to Hiroshi Meguro, CEO of Mitsui & Co Moscow. The preliminary agreement on the project has been signed during a working meeting with the head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries Ilya Shestakov, reported Russian media SoyaNews.

Russian farmers will expand soybean area

In April soybean exports from Russia reached 21.8 KMT against 19.6 KMT in April 2015 and 72.9 KMT in March 2016. The reduction of April's shipments did not affect the overall results of the season. Since the beginning of the current marketing year (September-April) Russia exported 370.5 KMT of soybean against 229.6 KMT during the same period last season. No doubt the current marketing year will set a new record. Almost all soybeans were supplied to Chinese market.

The expected growth of the world population to more than 9 billion people in 2050 and an increasing demand for highly nutritional foods will lead to an enormous pressure on the future food production system. The protein supply is in this respect most critical, both for human consumption and for animal feed. Plant proteins are considered more sustainable and more cost-effective than animal proteins. Partly replacing animal protein in existing products with new plant protein ingredients or developing new plant protein-based products is an effective approach in making more protein available for a larger part of the world population. In addition to the use of proteins directly from crops, large organic side and waste streams are available for the extraction of proteins, also in the food-chain.

Feed sector bodies slam EC over five-month GM approval delay

Europe's feed sector organisations have urged the European Commission (EC) to give its approval for three GM soya bean products, complaining bitterly that the items have been in the EU "pending" tray since January this year, despite being accepted by the European Food Safety Authority (efsa) in 2015.
